I love to fish and wish i could 365 days a year.

Zach McBride is a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer and licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain with over 16 years of experience at the helm—and a lifetime on the water. As a full-time charter captain and part of Team DB Sportfishing Charters for the past 14 years, Zach has guided thousands of anglers across more than 120 miles of Lake Erie’s best fishing ports. For him, this isn’t just a job or a passion—it’s a way of life.Zach caught his first walleye at age 3 and grew up fishing bass tournaments alongside his grandpa, dad, and uncles. He became a professional first mate at just 13 and owned his first walleye charter boat by 16. Now, with 18 years of guiding experience and an average of 3,000 to 5,000 walleye landed annually for over a decade, Zach has become one of the most consistent and trusted names on the lake. NFL legends like Ray Lewis and James Harrison call his charter their go-to when they want results. Before fully committing to life on the water, Zach was a multi-sport athlete, competing at a high level in football, baseball, and golf. He even turned down a college golf scholarship to pursue his career as a charter captain—a choice that speaks to just how deep his roots run in the outdoors. These days, he still loves the thrill of competition, whether it’s on the course or in the woods.Originally from Ohio, Zach now calls Geneva his home port—where his grandparents kept a summer home and where he’s planted roots of his own. When he’s not on the water, he’s chasing big bucks, staying sharp on the golf course, or spending time with his son and family. His dad remains the biggest influence on his outdoor life. The outdoors isn’t just something Zach does—it’s who he is.

Since the late 1970s, I’ve been fishing Lake Erie. My first time was on a charter with my father, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I love being a charter captain. It is my pleasure to bring families and friends out to the walleye capital of the world for a great day of fishing. For 15 years, I’ve been honored to be a part of Team DB.

I grew up fishing the eastern central basin of Lake Erie with my dad and uncle since I was able to walk. I started first mating in 2016 and obtained my USCG captains license in 2020. I specialize in deep-water trolling for Walleye & Steelhead May through October, but I also love to get out in the late fall to catch cold-water eyes out of Cleveland and jig up the reefs in the western basin in the spring. I have been extremely fortunate to be mentored in my guide journey by a handful of the best to ever do it on Lake Erie. I have a huge passion for sharing my knowledge and skills with my clients and ensuring that every trip is an experience that they will never forget.

My love for Lake Erie walleye started in the mid 1970s with my father on his charter boat. In the mid 1980s I got my drivers license and started chasing river run fish of the Great Lakes the fall King Salmon and the Winter and Spring Steelhead opened up a whole different realm for me as I waited for boating season. Now decade’s later I still fish by the seasons. Early spring I’ll be in the Western Basin of Lake Erie chasing pre and post spawn walleye. My charter boat season start following walleye as they spawn on the reefs and hard pan of western Lake Erie in April. As the waters warm through May and into June and the walleye migrate east towards the cool clean waters of the central basin of Lake Erie I follow them to my home port of Geneva on the lake Ohio. As summer ends and fall approaches the autumn River run King Salmon peak my interest for a few weeks before the fall steelhead enter the streams and rivers till spring pushes them back out into the Great Lakes.

Born and raise in NE Ohio, I spent my summer weekends growing up on the shores and waters of Lake Eries central basin. Whether it was fishing or water sports, being on the water is where you could fine me. I got into the hardcore walleye fishing scene 10 years ago and haven’t looked back since. Running my own boat fishing with friends is where it all started. I was fortunate enough to get around the DB crew and they took me in with open arms. I’d have to say we are more like family than friends. Capt. John pushed me to get my captains license 2 years ago and I’m glad he did. As a captain I love taking customers out and seeing that big smile on their face as they reel in that trophy walleye, especially our young anglers. It is an honor and privilege to be a part of TeamDB, with some of the best captains Lake Erie has to offer. See you on the water!
